Home Based Business Opportunities: The Disadvantages

When people look at home based business opportunities they usually just see the good side of things. They see all the benefits of being in business. The ability to schedule your working hours, the personal freedom and the financial control you now have over your future. Theses are all strong reasons to own your own business but you also have to consider the other side of the equation. What about the disadvantages, for lack of a better term, of being in business? Business is not always one big successful party. There will be problems and issues that may make you wish you have never started a business.

One of the first problems you may run into relates to you. Are you the type of person you could work for? Remember, you will be the boss! So look into a mirror and ask yourself: Is this a person that I would entrust the future of my home based business? Does this person have the necessary skills to run this type of business? Does this person have the temperament and personality for this type of business? Once you get thought this analysis and come up with a positive response you have to consider some other disadvantages of home based business opportunities.

When you start a business one think that you will be giving up is a steady pay-cheque. This is a major concern for any new business start-up. You are giving up the security of a regular income until your business gets established. You do not have a steady pay check coming in and you lose the company pension. Do you have enough money on hand to build the business or should you maybe start part time first and build up slowly over time. Those are just some things to consider and disadvantages prior to starting any home based business opportunities.

Working at home is not as easy as it sounds. You have to become a master at time management, and quickly or you will get into trouble with the day to day function of your business. Many people who find themselves not having to answer to someone above them can soon become excellent procrastinators. You are your own boss and will find it easy to put off doing work when there are so many distractions. Home based business opportunities also require you to be able to separate family time from work. You have to be able to manage interruptions by family and friends. You are always available and may find it difficult to close the office door and not respond when family or friends want to talk to you.

It may sound unrealistic, but working at home may become a bit lonely. Keep in mind that you are not out among others and you may miss that interaction with other people. There is nobody to go for coffee with, no one to make small talk with, and no one to visit. You may be the only person on your street that is at home everyone else is away working. Owners of home based business opportunities often find the isolation and loneness very depressing and it is a major cause of people quitting and giving up on their business.

There will be many things that could be classified as a disadvantage, but they are certainly out-weighed by the benefits of owning a successful home based business. So after looking at the advantages and disadvantages of home based business opportunities, I think you will agree that the advantages out weight the disadvantages. Success will not be easy and you need to understand that it takes an incredible amount of work to make your home based business opportunity profitable. There are no short cuts or free rides. If someone is telling you how easy it was, then you need to ask some serious questions from that person. More times than not, they are lying to you to just get your money.
