During this year the US Small Business Administration and the US department of Commerce conducted their first Census of the home based business sector. They conducted a sampling of 125,000 home-based businesses and found some very interesting facts related to home based business.

One of the most surprising revelations was the fact that larger numbers of people were using their home to earn an income with a home based business. As well, the home based business sector represents 52 percent of all firms and provides 10% of the total receipts of the economy. Another surprising fact was that over 50,000 home based businesses had sales of over $1,000,000! it was also learned that about 20% of these home based businesses had employees, creating a large number of jobs. Many home based businesses, almost 50%, were started with personal savings rather than bank loans. Another interesting fact was that most home business owners worked an average of 26-35 hours per week, less than most of us who work for someone else.

The home based business sector has continued to grow and it’s contributions to our economy are now realized. More and more people are taking advantage of home based business opportunities. Although that data was collected over 15 years ago it is an important milestone to remind us how valuable a resource this sector was and continues to be to the US economy. When people look at home based business opportunities they usually just see the good side of things. They see all the benefits of being in business. The ability to schedule your working hours, the personal freedom and the financial control you now have over your future. Theses are all strong reasons to own your own business but you also have to consider the other side of the equation. What about the disadvantages, for lack of a better term, of being in business? Business is not always one big successful party. There will be problems and issues that may make you wish you have never started a business.

One of the first problems you may run into relates to you. Are you the type of person you could work for? Remember, you will be the boss! So look into a mirror and ask yourself: Is this a person that I would entrust the future of my home based business? Does this person have the necessary skills to run this type of business? Does this person have the temperament and personality for this type of business? Once you get thought this analysis and come up with a positive response you have to consider some other disadvantages of home based business opportunities.

When you start a business one think that you will be giving up is a steady pay-cheque. This is a major concern for any new business start-up. You are giving up the security of a regular income until your business gets established. You do not have a steady pay check coming in and you lose the company pension. Do you have enough money on hand to build the business or should you maybe start part time first and build up slowly over time. Those are just some things to consider and disadvantages prior to starting any home based business opportunities.

Working at home is not as easy as it sounds. You have to become a master at time management, and quickly or you will get into trouble with the day to day function of your business. Many people who find themselves not having to answer to someone above them can soon become excellent procrastinators. You are your own boss and will find it easy to put off doing work when there are so many distractions. Home based business opportunities also require you to be able to separate family time from work. You have to be able to manage interruptions by family and friends.
